AMD starts producing quad-core Opteron processor

AMD starts producing quad-core Opteron processor

The way how Intel and AMD are working on their processors is sometimes similar to marching as they both regularly come up with a new idea or a solution that nihilities difference between them. Of course, the difference is sizable nevertheless. So far Intel owns the processing domain while AMD has pulled off in chip architecture design. And only just a short while ago, on the 13th of November 2008 AMD has planed a great switch in production models. For very long time, from the mid 2007 to be more concrete, AMD production facilities were all given to their chip for Barcelona quad-core processor, now there is a new one called Opteron or Shanghai in its code name.
amd-opteron-quadjpg
Thinking over a Barcelona substitute, AMD developers decided to make the server chip smaller and faster, so they have added a number upgrades to shared L3 cash and SRAM, and have turned from 65 nm size to 45 nm. Such changes have required architecture revision, but everything is well made. Everything is also made to be compatible with Barcelona up to a very last part of the chip. This is the policy of AMD to make life easier for server parks holders, who in turn vote with their wallets for AMD because Opteron is not the only one processor in AMD family that will let them improve BIOS without constant changing of the entire jack and slot packaging.

Except for reconsidering the Barcelona’s architecture, designers have also generously added a lot more memory to cash and SRAM. against the Barcelona’s background, Opteron’s L3 cash and SRAM are three times and twice respectively as big as the elder ones. Quad-core processors will now have 6 MB cash and 8 MB static random-access memory.

To see what latest quad-core Opteron is capable of will not be very easy for some time because they have just started to appear on the factory. But luckily there is an interesting part of Opetron in work presentation. The video follows.

Asus Eee Top – All-in-one PC with touchscreen

Asus Eee Top – All-in-one PC with touchscreen

“All-in-one” PC become more and more popular this days, with Apple Macs leading on this market. Surely, why keep clumsy and noisy black box under your desk with ton of wires hanging, when you can use stylish and wire-free all-in-one PC that sits on your desk and attracts attention? While this market is captured by Apple, many other manufacturers want to have a part of it with their own models. Asus, main player on the netbook market, decided to enter this domain. Company is extending borders of its Eee PC brand with the interesting hybrid of regular all-in-one PC and Tablet PC – and it looks very similar to all iMac owners. Let’s look closer and examine this novelty.
eeetopl
Asus Eee Top – that’s how it is named – is a very interesting all-in-one desktop, mainly because it is made with a Tablet PC abilities – wide and bright 15.6 inched LCD is touchscreen enabled, so it is possible to work with it without mouse or keyboard at all. Another thing that makes Asus Eee Top related to its netbook brothers is Intel Atom 1.6 GHz CPU, which is popular in ultra portable devices due to its energy saving and performance characteristics. Eee Top will also be equipped with 160 GB HDD, 1 GB DDR2 RAM, built-in 1.3 megapixel webcam and internal MMC/SDHC card reader.

While Eee PC was mainly sold with Linux inside, this one will be sold with Windows XP only (this is a subject to change, so we may see a Linux version later). However, new instant-on feature (copied from Voodoo Envy), which is called Express Gate, is based on Linux, and gives the ability to use basic functions like browsing internet, listening music and talking in Skype even without need to boot up in Windows – this shell boots up in seconds, so it is quite useful if you want quickly send a letter or listen to music.

This interesting model show that Asus is not limited to netbooks only, company wants to widen their product range with some new experimental models. This hybrid includes best parts of its every side – portability and touchscreen from Tablet PC and clean looks with good hardware inside from all-in-one PCs. Let’s wait until it will be released, it will be a very reasonable purchase if its price tag of 700 dollars will not change.

Motorola Aura – 16 million colors on the round screen

Motorola Aura – 16 million colors on the round screen

moto-aura-rotated

Motorola is now on her new quest for applause and for our money saved for Christmas presents. The latest announcement Motorola has made today is stunning. The new mobile phone Motorola Aura is breathing on us with its glam and exclusivity from every picture, from any angle. A perfect gadget for a bragger, but Motorola Aura is not only a fancy wrap-up with poor technical implementation, as one might have probably thought for instance, – no, Aura – is a record breaker. That round spot with a deep red shine is a first screen to go beyond all the limits set for even best of smartphones.

Design and technology bound together in an everyday gadget a juicy piece of smartphones’ market. Such a way Motorola Aura appears to be a rival to many other phones including Nokia 8800 and others. Will Aura succeed? Probably yes, because sales round the globe start in December – right when everyone is thinking hard over another set of New Year presents for their families. But I think Motorola Aura is more like a present for your girlfriend rather that for someone else. Anyway, 2000 USD is an enormous sum of money for a smartphone, even if is close to a work of art.

There is a lot to tell about how Motorola Aura is built, so the first glance is mostly attracted by its body. Stainless steel housing panels are decorated with patterns and fancifully crossing lines. This beauty will last through ages because materials are really of a high quality. The coating around the moving parts is a PVD one – the same technology is used in producing Swiss watches. Aura’s keyboard is one of the most intricate keyboards out there. Every key on it is being lined up one by one and carefully polished.

Rotating form factor that was chosen for Motorola Aura by designers became a headache for technicians. To make the rotary mechanism work stable after thousands of openings and closings, more than 700 unique components were tested. Aura doesn’t share any of its parts with other Motorola products.

The final part – display and lens – are actually record breakers. Motorola has installed in Aura the first ever screen with 16 million colors in it. Resolution is 300 dpi. The whole ensemble is sheltered with a sapphire crystal lens. It weights 62 carats and will prevent the record-breaking screen from being scratched.

isobot-gadget

Robotomania continues. This time it is the worlds smallest fully articulated humanoid robot. If you are still looking for the best gift for your kids, get the new I – Sobot, a gadget that represents the big brother of the omnibot from the 80’s.

Its personality is based on four operational modes. The movements of the I-Sobot are controlled by the LCD remote control unit mode.

Just move the joystick and push some buttons and the I-Sobot will start to walk and perform dozens of motions. He can balance on one leg, lie down and get up from any position.

Its programming mode allows to program a sequence of 80 actions and after all replay them with a single button press.

Command him to play a guitar, whistle or watch those 18 preprogrammed special actions. For the whole picture don’t forget the most important mode – the voice control command. He recognizes 10 voice commands, speaks using over 200 words and phrases.

Your wish is his command. Speak to him and he will react with many unpredictable but appropriate actions.

The i-sobot measures 6.5*3.8*2.6 and weights only 12.0z. Three AAA batteries are already included. When these batteries are fully charged, the i-sobot will run 60 minutes under normal operation.

He is based on built-in Gyro sensor, a built-in speaker unit and microphone along with a voice recognition chip.

The servo unit has 17 degrees of freedom, has 3.38cm in height, 4cm in width,0.33 cm in depth. Its maximum movement degree is 220 that’s quite enough for a gadget this smart.
